AVE VERUM
Charles Gounod, arr. Robert Longfield Gr. 2
Originally for SATB chorus and piano, Ave Verum has been
reworked for string orchestra. It is mature and beautiful music. In
G major, it requires the upper strings to mix high and low 2s with
the use of the 4th finger. All sections use half, 2nd, and 3rd position.

PHANTOM’S NIGHT (Legends of Cuba Road)
Joshua Reznicow Gr. 2½
Perfect for your Halloween concert, this spooky piece in G minor
has a good bit of divisi in the violins. There are two cello parts,
one that shifts and one that does not. Special effects such as glissandi
and tremolo abound, including heavy accents and easy
double stops. Basses use half position extensively and there are
many chromatic notes in all sections—plus a cello solo!

ROUND DANCE
Andrew Levin Gr. 2
A short piece, but packed with valuable teaching points. It is a
dance in D minor that introduces 16th notes and two-note slurs,
some of which include string crossings. Upper strings use low 1s
and 2s, cellos low 1s, and basses half position. A more lyric theme
combines with the opening idea for a dramatic ending.

SLEEPY WALRUS WALTZ
Lynne Latham and Thom Sharp Gr. 2½
Your bass section emulates a walrus sleeping (in A minor) and
waking from his slumber. His alarm clock is the first violins and
their harsh trill. Basses use half, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd positions, set up
logically and with fingerings provided. Violins and violas learn
high and low chromatic fingerings and will improve their notereading
skills. Violins also have a flashy glissando into third
position. Tremolo and left-hand pizzicato are introduced before
the walrus completes his clumsy waltz around the room and falls
gently back to sleep.

NO WORRIES
Thom Sharp Gr. 2
This easy-going yet lively swing tune in G major encompasses
many teaching points. Of course, the first issue is teaching students
to swing. There are high and low 2s and use of 4th finger for
upper strings. Viola will use 3rd finger extension. The theme is
played both arco and pizzicato. All except basses will use 2 and 3
note slurs and longer bow strokes for the lyrical countermelody.
