Ancient Healing
Technique
“Acupuncture is a 3,000-year-old
healing technique that has been
proven to successfully treat conditions
ranging from musculoskeletal
problems, like back pain and neck
pain, to migraines, insomnia, stress,
infertility, and so much more,” explains
Sohee Bidol-Lee, MD, an internal
medicine specialist and
acupuncturist in Paramus.
The Science
Behind It
Acupuncture may be met with
some skepticism by those who’ve
not experienced it. But there is science
behind this alternative medicine.
“Acupuncture is sometimes
thought of as a last resort, when a
patient is still suffering from symptoms
and is desperate for relief,”
says Dr. Bidol-Lee. “But there is no
conflict between acupuncture and
conventional medicine. They should
actually complement each other.”
How It Works
Traditional Chinese medicine is
based on an ancient philosophy that
energy flows along specific pathways,
called meridians, throughout
the body. If the flow of this energy
gets blocked, pain and illness can
result. Acupuncture can unblock
this energy in the body and stimulate
the body’s ability to function
and heal. Research has shown
acupuncture's positive effects on
the nervous system, endocrine and
immune systems, cardiovascular
system, and digestive system.
What to Expect
During and after acupuncture treatments,
many patients say they feel
very relaxed as they lie on the table,
while precise acu-points are stimulated
on various areas of the body
with slender, fine needles about as
thin as a cat whisker. The needles are
gently placed so there is little to no
discomfort. They typically stay in the
body between five and 30 minutes,
depending on the health goal.
How Often Do You
Have To Go?
The number of treatments will differ
from person to person. Some
people experience dramatic relief in
the first treatment, says Dr. Bidol-
Lee. Others, who have more chronic
conditions, may need up to two
treatments a week for several
months.
