The Evolution of 5th Avenue South
Avenue South
Being a 45 year resident of the City of Naples, with a political
career that has so far spanned 34 years, I can certainly
say that I have seen our city evolve in a positive way to the
gem that she is today.
In 1973, 5th Avenue South was the heart of Naples. It boasted
a few stores, a pharmacy, a small grocer, one bank, one
restaurant, and a few businesses scattered along the Avenue.
As the years passed, more and more people were discovering
5th Avenue South and it blossomed into the place
to see and be seen. In 1995 the Avenue was starting to lose
the wonderful charm she had held for so long. Businesses
were moving north. New shopping centers, restaurants, and

a myriad of other reasons were contributing to this exodus. We realized there was a problem
and it needed to be fixed. We hired renowned land use planner, Andrés Duany, and after
studying 5th Avenue South he made recommendations of what we needed to do. We took his
words of wisdom to heart and made the changes. They worked, and he has made numerous
trips over the years to Naples and remains not only a fan of our redevelopment, but an advisor
as well. Today 5th Avenue South is a vibrant, bustling, exciting street.
With the above being said, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention one of our city’s cultural superstars,
The Naples Players. They began in 1953 from a small group of local talent and over
a twenty-five-year period they had a few different homes as they grew not only in size but
popularity. In 1998 the city was so proud when they built their permanent home, the Sugden
Theatre, right here where you sit today. As Naples grew, so did their level of talent. They offer
so much for so many in our community.
From aspiring young actors
and actresses, to students who
have an interest in the performing
arts, there seems to be something
for everyone. The Naples Players
do over 250 performances a year
and as Mayor of the City of Naples
I can truly say I have never been to
a performance that I haven’t thoroughly
enjoyed! Please enjoy your
stay in our beautiful area. I’m glad
you’re here!
