Pomme de Terre State Park
the early French explorers named the river Pomme de Terre, meaning “Apple of the
comment on how beautiful it is as they enjoy hiking the trails among the spring
brisk autumn colors, or camping in one of the yurts or the Lake House as the winter
snow falls.
Plan on staying for a few days in one of the overnight accommodations. Many
of the vacationers to Pomme de Terre Lake enjoy camping, an inexpensive way of
staying overnight, and taking part in the many activities the area has to offer. Pomme
de Terre State Park is divided into the Hermitage and Pittsburg areas. Each area
is full of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors in an atmosphere of peaceful leisure.
Pomme de Terre State Park provides a diversity of locations with 240 campsites,
more than any other Missouri state park. The Hermitage campground provides level
campsites in a grassy setting for the ideal family camp-out under the many large
shade trees. The campground offers electric and basic campsites close to the water,
hot showers, a playground, laundry facilities and a dump station. A park store is
conveniently located at the entrance to the campground. The store is open Friday,
Saturday and Sunday from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. It
-
nirs and best of all, hand-dipped ice cream.
The Pittsburg Area campground provides plenty of shade with many campsites
that sit atop the rock bluffs and others that slope to the water’s edge. This campground
is located in an open woodland setting, making a more rustic camping
experience, but with the nearby conveniences of home. Water/electric, electric and
basic campsites are all available in the Pittsburg campground. Also located in the
campground are hot showers, a playground, laundry facilities and a dump station.
If you prefer staying in a more comfortable atmosphere, the state park has
several lodging options available. The Hermitage Area provides a secluded three
bedroom Lake House. Amenities include a full bathroom, central heat and air,
television and laundry facilities. Kitchen amenities include a gas range, microwave,
full-size refrigerator, dishwasher and dining table that seats six. Other conveniences
include bath towels, bed linens, pots, pans, table service for ten, coffee pot and
toaster. A boat launch and a picnic area are located near the Lake House. This is a
perfect option to bring your whole family together or some of your old friends for a
week’s vacation.
Yurts are available at the Pittsburg campground for a unique lodging option.
A yurt is a circular structure with a heavy fabric cover, much like a tent, but with a
wooden frame that makes it strong and weather tight. The yurt sits on a wooden
platform with decking and a locking door. Three large windows provide natural light
and view of your surroundings. Each yurt contains a log futon and a log bunk bed
grill are located outside the unit. Be sure to bring your camping gear, such as lanterns,
cooking and eating utensils, bed linens or sleeping bags, and water containers.
The yurts do not have running water.

some of the amazing migratory and resident birds making the park their home. Cedar Bluff Trail, in the Hermitage Area, is a
1.5-mile trail that follows rocky bluffs along both sides of an upland ridge offering spectacular views of the lake. The Indian Point
Trail, in the Pittsburg Area, is a 2.75 mile trail that snakes through spectacular open woodlands to a natural overlook with panoramic
views of the lake scenery.
If you desire to lay back under the sun, enjoy the large swimming beaches each area of the park offers. Both areas have public
boat launches and picnic areas. Near the Pittsburg campground is a full-service marina and boat launch. The marina offers slip
are hungry, the marina grill serves breakfast, lunch and supper, along with hand-dipped ice cream. The Pittsburg area also has a
day use area which includes an open shelter large groups can reserve.
