United States Army Staff Sergeant Charles Douglas
Windham, Jr., from Norcross, Georgia was inducted
into the 2016 Class of the Georgia Military Veterans’
Reconnaissance Patrol.
On October 23, 1968, December 7, 1968, and February 9,
1969, Windham and his team became decidedly engaged with
well equipped, heavily armed, highly trained, and numerically
superior North Vietnamese Army units. During each of these three
undaunted courage, determined resolve, exemplary gallantry, and
brotherly care for his fellow soldiers, while always successfully
accomplishing these vital intelligence gathering missions. Even
when knocked down and wounded from the blast of enemy hand
grenades, he continued to rally and encourage his men, while
covering their safe withdrawal to more defensible positions with
When one of his men fell wounded, unable to move, and
immediately rushed to his aid, suppressed the enemy’s assault and
drug his comrade to a covered location. For his actions he was
awarded the Purple Heart, two Bronze Star Medals for Valor, and
our nation’s third highest award for valor, the Silver Star.
After his military service, Windham continued to lead an
exemplary life of character as a proud American, veteran, and
patriot.
