Allergy & Immunology: Evaluation, physical
and laboratory diagnosis, and management
of disorders involving the immune system.
Anesthesiology: The anesthesiologist’s principal
task is providing pain relief and maintenance
of a stable condition during an operation. The
anesthesiologists assess the risk of the patient
undergoing surgery and optimize the patient’s
condition prior to, during, and after surgery.
Cardiology: Diseases of the heart, lungs, and blood
vessels and manages complex cardiac conditions
such as heart attacks, and life-threatening, abnormal
heartbeat rhythms.
Cardiovascular Surgery: Surgical correction of
cardiac disorders. Cardiac surgical services range
from repairing congenital heart defects in infants
and children to performing heart transplantations
and other complex procedures for high-risk
adult patients.
Dermatology: Diagnosis and treatment of patients
with benign and malignant disorders of the skin,
mouth, external genitalia, hair and nails.
Emergency Medicine: Emergency Medicine is
primarily a hospital-based specialty, which involves
the treatment of patients who come to an emergency
room. The emergency physician provides immediate
evaluation, care, and disposition of patients with
acute illness and injury. If the emergency physician
feels the patient should be admitted, then they are
referred to the appropriate specialty of medicine
or surgery for admission to the hospital.
Endocrinology: Disorders of the internal glands
such as the thyroid and adrenal glands. Also
deals with disorders such as diabetes, metabolic
and nutritional disorders, pituitary diseases, and
menstrual and sexual problems.
Facial Plastic Surgery: Focuses on the knowledge,
skill and understanding required to perform esthetic,
plastic and reconstructive surgery of the face, head,
and neck.
Family Medicine/General Practice: Prevent, diagnose
and treat a wide variety of ailments in patients of all
ages, with special emphasis on care of families on a
continuing basis.
Gastroenterology: Treatment of diseases of the
digestive organs including the stomach, bowels,
liver, and gallbladder.
Geriatric Medicine: Geriatric Medicine is not
regarded as a sub-specialty, but rather as an
added competence in trained internists. The
elderly have special needs since they often have
an altered presentation of illness and special
drug interactions.
Gynecology: Medical and surgical care of the female
reproductive system and associated disorders.
Infectious Disease: These sub-specialists deal
with infectious diseases of all types and in all organs.
Conditions requiring selective use of antibiotics call
for this special skill. Patients with fevers that have not
been explained, as well as rare and exotic infections
with bacteria, viral and fungi, are often diagnosed and
treated by these sub-specialists. They are especially
suited to help in the treatment of patients who
may present multiple and unique infections.
Internal Medicine: Long-term and comprehensive
care; managing both common and complex illness
of adolescents, adults, and the elderly.
Nephrology: Disorders of the kidney, high blood
pressure, fluid and mineral balance, and dialysis
of body wastes when the kidneys do not function.
Neurology: Diagnosis and treatment of all types of
disease or impaired function of the brain, spinal cord,
peripheral nerves, muscles, and autonomic nervous
system, as well as the blood vessels that relate to
these structures.
Neurosurgery: Operative and non-operative
management of disorders of the central,
peripheral, and autonomic nervous systems.
Obstetrics & Gynecology: The care of women
during pregnancy, childbirth, and the recuperative
period following delivery. Medical and surgical
care of the female reproductive system and
associated disorders.
