Permits are required
A recreation permit is required for overnight
camping in the Red River Gorge Geological
Area and Indian Creek. All vehicles on KY 15
or in the Red River Gorge and Indian Creek
areas north of KY 15 must display a permit
between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Permits are available at local stores and at
the Gladie Learning Center.
Camping is prohibited:
Within 300 feet of any developed road
Within 300 feet of any Forest Service trail
Within 600 feet of Grays Arch
In any picnic area or parking area

Do not camp in rockshelters.
These sensitive areas provide critical habitat
for plants and animals.
The following are prohibited:

Camping within 100 feet of the base of any
cliff, or back of any rockshelter
•
Building, maintaining, attending and using
a fire, campfire or stove within 100 feet of
the base of any cliff, or the back of a rock
shelter

Important Rules to Remember
This area is full of cliffs. While it
makes our area unique and
beautiful, it is extremely
dangerous. Avoid camping near cliff
edges. Avoid foot traffic after dark.
Watch your
footing when walking near cliffs.
Keep children supervised at all
times.
• Campers must camp at least 100
feet from the base of any cliff and
rock shelter and 300 feet from road
or any official trail.
• Kentucky law prohibits the
consumption of alcohol in public
places and open containers.
• Due to black bears, food storage
restrictions apply. Use bear resistant
containers for food and garbage or
suspend food off ground.
• Mountain bikes and motorized
vehicles are prohibited on trails in
the Gorge.
• Never Approach A Bear. If you
see a bear, back away slowly. Do
Not Run.
• Pets Allowed in Gorge.
Leave No Trace
Tread lightly and leave no trace of
your visit so others may enjoy the
beauty and nature. Take out with you
whatever you bring into the area.
Dispose of waste properly.
Fire Management
Only small, contained campfires
permitted. Campfires are prohibited
within 150 feet of woodlands
during fire seasons of Feb. 15 –April
30th and Oct. 1- Dec. 15th except
between hours of 6:00 pm -6:00 am.
Never leave a campfire unattended.
Make sure campfire is completely
out before leaving your site. Drown
it with water or cover with soil.
Never flick or throw out cigarettes.
Trail Rules & Restrictions
The following acts are prohibited:
• Carving or damaging rock
formations and trees.
• Disturbing, capturing or killing
any animal.
• Picking flowers or removing any
plant material.
• Collecting specimens, including
those for research purposes.
• Building fires or backcountry
camping.
• Rock climbing and rappelling.
• Riding mountain bikes, ORVs or
horses.
• Use of alcoholic beverages.
• Hiking with pets.
• Off-trail hiking.
• Hiking at night.
