On the cover: The year was 1896. The
Williamsburg section of Brooklyn embraced a
wealthier, more cosmopolitan class of Jewish
people than the Brownsville section. Yet,
reasoned Rabbi Cohn, they are just as lost and
just as in need of salvation as the Jewish people
in Brownsville. Additionally, the Williamsburg
section of Brooklyn had approximately 50,000
Jews, while the Brownsville section had only
around 20,000. Without question, more Jewish
people could be reached with the gospel if a
witness could go forth in the Williamsburg
section of Brooklyn. Leopold knew that God
honored faith. He had trusted God for the
financial backing needed to reach the Jews in
Brownsville. Now he determined to trust God
for the financial backing needed to reach the
Jews in Williamsburg. When Leopold went to
Williamsburg in search of a place, he immediately
found a store that would suit the needs of the
mission, but he lacked the funds. Leopold put
down a $5 deposit in good faith. Later, the Lord
provided through a faithful Christian woman
and many other friends along the way. In the
125 years since then, we have seen the Lord’s
faithfulness time and time again!
ABOUT CHOSEN PEOPLE MINISTRIES
Rabbi Leopold Cohn, like many other Jewish immigrants, left his native Hungary in 1892 in search of a new
life in Brooklyn, New York. Rabbi Cohn’s journey, however, went further than the miles of travel across the
Atlantic. His search for answers about the Messiah, in whom he fervently believed, led to a surprising truth.
One day on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, Rabbi Cohn heard a message in his own Yiddish tongue that
was so compelling he had to dig deeper. In doing so, he discovered that the Messiah for whom he yearned
was none other than Yeshua (Jesus)—and that the message of Messiah’s redeeming sacrifice was the truth to
which the Hebrew Scriptures had been pointing all along.
Rabbi Cohn dedicated the rest of his life to conveying the message of the Jewish Messiah to his beloved
Jewish people. He and his wife, Rose, began their outreach in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn in 1894.
Combining God’s love with practical aid, the Cohns worked faithfully within the community of Jewish
immigrants. Despite understandable opposition, some Jewish people who considered the message of Messiah
with an open mind became convinced of its truth, and the work expanded.
Today, Chosen People Ministries is proclaiming the good news of Yeshua in Australia, Argentina, Brazil,
Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Russia,
South Africa, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The work continues to be based upon the
biblical message of Messiah’s forgiveness combined with His love in action.
Although much has changed since the days of Leopold and Rose Cohn, our need for God’s reconciling love
has not. Chosen People Ministries remains committed and ready to reach out to Jewish people and others
with the redeeming message of Jesus the Messiah. To learn more about Chosen People Ministries, write to us
