Types and Patterns
of Quilts
A traditional quilt is
a cloth sandwich, with a top,
which is usually the decorated
part, a back and a filler in the
middle. This type is great for
keeping warm at night.
Another variation of
the quilt is the ‘summer’ quilt,
which is not made with the
middle filling, so it is useful as
a bed-cover during the warmer
months. It does however have
the traditional intricate stitching
holding the two layers together.
For early Amish quilters,
inspiration for the beautiful
patterns came from their life
and their surroundings. Patterns
were reminiscent of such things
as barns, fences, cabins, and the
out-of-doors. Names of quilt
patterns include Sunshine and
Shadow, Pinwheel, and Dresden
Plate (flower-inspired). It’s
the uniqueness of each quilt
that makes them so attractive
to collectors. Quilts are often
viewed as works of art. The quilts
are not only used as bedding, but
are often hung on walls to fully
admire the complex pattern and
the bright, vivid colors.

Now, in this century, quilts
are viewed as timeless works of
