Pride
When it comes to sins and vices, pride is the big dog. This is
-
importance. The opposite of pride is humility.
Pride is known as the root sin, or at the root of all sin. The prideful person
is one who thinks they know better than everyone else. This also includes
Satan. Satan was once a mighty angel but because he thought he knew
better than God, through the sin of pride he fell. Pride caused him to reject
43
God, just as it causes us to reject God. (See CCC 391-395)
Pride manifests itself in many different ways. First, it causes us to turn
away from God, because we think we know better than He does how to
handle our lives. It causes us to look down on others, thinking ourselves
better than they. It causes us to pick and choose which commandments
and teachings of the Church we want to accept, and which ones we refuse
to accept. God becomes an afterthought, if He is thought of at all,
because of our self-centeredness.
There is, by the way, a good kind of pride. When a parent takes pride in
one of their children, it is a good thing, and not the sin of pride.
Many people are familiar with an axiom that contains great truth, “Pride
goes before a fall.” This is from Proverbs 16:18 – “Pride goes before
disaster and a haughty spirit before a fall.” (NAB)
