The two main books used during Mass are the lectionary and the
Roman Missal. The lectionary is the book that contains the Scripture
ambo, or pulpit, from which the Scripture readings are proclaimed.
Many parishes use another book that is carried in during the opening

The other book that is prominent at Mass is called the Roman
Missal. This book contains the prayers used by the priest or bishop
presiding at Mass. It also provides rubrics, or instructions for the

The word “rubric” comes from the Latin word for “red,” because
the instructions are typically in red type.
Finally, many parishes have books in the pews. These books allow
prayers, and many contain hymns that are often used at Mass.
These books are called missalettes, as they are smaller, seasonal
versions of the Roman Missal.
