Conventional Seating

Sitting on a flat stool forces
the spine into an unnatural
C-shaped curve.
Unnatural spinal curvature
increases stress on the discs
which can lead to pain. The
4th and 5th lumbar discs are
the “classic” trouble spots.
The ideal angle of the hips
to the spine before causing
undue stress is 45˚ to 50˚.
Sitting on a flat chair tends to
bend the hips at 90˚ to the
spine, causing it to deform
into the “C” shape (left).
The special shape of the
Bambach Saddle Seat helps
to preserve the natural
curvature of the spine.
Maintaining the natural
S-shape of the spine (right)
means the discs are not put
under harmful pressure,
helping to avoid back pain
and related problems.
The hips are kept at the
optimum angle of about 45˚
to the spine, so thigh and
back muscles are at their
most relaxed.
Why a saddle design?
The Australian occupational therapist and passionate
rider, Mary Gale, studied the phenomenon that
patients with physical impairments who were unable
to sit on a chair, would sit in an upright position on a
horse without the need of any help. Her extensive
research proved that sitting on a saddle seat with
back curvature forces the spine’s natural “S” posture.
Since 1988 the Bambach Saddle Seat has been
continuously improved and evaluated positively
in many studies.
“I can get closer to the
patient and my posture is
much better. I notice when
I’m sitting in other chairs
that I tend to sit straighter.
I’m hoping that by using
this chair I can postpone
retirement a little longer!
I wholeheartedly
recommend this chair for
all dental staff , especially
dental hygienists.”
