by the curious since the early 1880s. Researchers have learned a
great deal about Florida’s natural history by studying fossil shark teeth,
marine shells and the fossilized remains of extinct land animals found
in the sink. There are lots of fun and interesting things to do here.
Visitors can enjoy picnicking, hiking trails and learning more about this
sinkhole through interpretive displays. 4732 Millhopper Road, Gainesville,

MARJORIE KINNAN RAWLINGS HISTORIC STATE PARK – Walk back
in time at this National Historic Landmark, the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings
house and grounds is nestled between a quiet country road and
Lake Orange. The homestead is completely restored and preserved
as it was in the 1930s including a barn, tenant house, orange grove,
seasonal garden and nature trail. If you’ve read The Yearling or Cross
Creek, you’ll fully appreciate just how amazing this place is. But even
if not, you’ll enjoy the Old Florida Cracker culture and the wonderful
history in this Pulitzer Prize-winning writer’s home. For $3 you can take
the tour given on the hour, 18700 S. County Road 325 Cross Creek,

UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA CAMPUS – Bells ring out from the carillon,
their music echoing off the Ivy-clad bricks and through the oak-lined
plazas of the campus. You can wander amid Collegiate Gothic
Florida Gators. Visitors can explore the stadium, including the Heavener
Football Complex, with displays of Heisman and NCAA National
Championship trophies.
Explore the nature and culture throughout the 2,000-acre campus
from the bat houses at Lake Alice to the triple play of attractions – art
museums, natural history museums and performing arts center – at
the university’s Cultural Plaza. Other attractions dot the campus, from
walking trails to interactive exhibits and galleries.
ICHETUCKNEE SPRINGS STATE PARK – This crystal-clear freshwater
spring is a “can’t miss” warm-weather tradition. Float down the river in
an inner tube, paddle, snorkle, hike and picnic. The crystalline Ichet-
before it joins the Santa Fe River. You’ll want to keep your eyes out for
spectacular wildlife that can be viewed from the river, including whitetailed
deer, raccoons, wild turkeys, wood ducks and great blue herons.
A full-service concession offers food, refreshments, and outdoor products
from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Tubes plus snorkeling and
diving equipment can be rented from private vendors outside the park.
