If you do own a boat or personal
watercraft, you have plenty of company.
There were almost one million boats
registered in Florida in 2018 and nearly as
many smaller, unregistered boats. With all
that company in the water, it helps to:
• Know your boat, the equipment, controls
and load capacity.
• Obey signs and notices regarding vessel
speeds. Be aware of all restricted areas.
• Pay attention to the weather, it can change
quickly.
• Make sure that someone knows where you
plan to go and how long you will be on the
water.
• Always wear a Coast Guard approved life
jacket and have your passengers wear one
too. All children 5 and younger must wear
a life jacket in any vessel under 26 feet.
• Keep a flashlight, first aid kit, drinking
water and sunscreen in watertight
containers on your boat.
To find out about boat safety education
classes, call The Florida Fish & Wildlife
Commission at 850-488-4676 or go to
www.myfwc.com/boating. Our local
Coast Guard Auxiliary offers classes
on safe boating. For information on the
classes, call 941-270-3555 or visit www.
coastguardenglewood.com.
