Quit Wishin’ & Start Fishin’!
You don’t need waders and a
guide to have fun fishing. There
are plenty of great fishing holes,
including some family friendly faves.
Families with kids of all ages can
try their luck at The Lilly Pad Village,
which is built around a beautiful
¹⁄2-acre pond full of hungry catfish,
bream and smallmouth bass. A comfortable
wraparound dock is perfect
for young ones looking to catch their
first fish — as well as more serious
catch-and-release anglers. Poles, bait
and tackle are available. In addition
to fishing at The Lilly Pad Village,
families can mine for gems in the
covered flume or play a round of
mini golf. For more info and hours of
operation, visit lillypadvillage.com.
Toccoa Valley Campground is
known as the “home of the pink
tubes.” But it’s also home to some
prime fishing spots. The campground
lies right on the banks of the Toccoa
River, and registered campers can
wet a line in the river or nearby
creek. There’s even a fishing pond
reserved exclusively for small children
and individuals with handicaps.
Prefer to chase your trout in a
canoe or kayak? You can rent one
from TVC, too. And campers can
cook their catch over the fire at one
of TVC’s waterfront tent sites or RV
sites. For more information, visit
toccoavalleycampground.com.
Follow the
Rainbow
The Chattahoochee National Fish
Hatchery, located a few miles off
Hwy. 60 southeast of Morganton,
raises a million rainbow trout each
year to stock the area’s tailwaters,
streams and lakes. Visitors can tour
the hatchery and visitor center, fish
Rock Creek, have a picnic, take a
hike or camp nearby at the Frank
Gross Campground. The hatchery
offers special group tours and sponsors
annual fishing derbies for kids
and seniors. For directions and hours
of operation, visit fws.gov/southeast/
chattahoochee-forest.
