Celebrating
10 Years of
Play!
The Glazer Children’s Museum is celebrating
10 years of play in 2020! Play is truly
the work of children. Every time a child
plays new connections form in the brain,
building that child’s potential for the future.
As children play, they stretch their imaginations,
use creativity, improve motor skills,
take risks, and learn to adapt. Play develops
empathy and social skills as kids from different
backgrounds, races, genders, and abilities
all play together to build friendships and
joy. At GCM, we strive to create an inclusive
environment where all children can play,
discover, and connect to the world around
them. We are intent on providing accessible
programs, exhibits, and spaces where the
diverse needs and abilities of our guests are
accommodated and celebrated.
Mobility and accessibility are big priorities
at the Glazer Children’s Museum. In addition
to the accessible entrance, restrooms,
and elevators, all themed areas and most exhibits
are wheelchair accessible. We’re proud
to offer wheelchairs upon request and we
own several VELA activity chairs in a variety
of sizes for further mobility. Additionally, we
work with partners like Library for the Blind
to ensure we are offering a great experience
for our guests who are vision impaired.
The Glazer Children’s Museum is recognized
an Autism Friendly Business by the
Center for Autism & Related Disabilities
(CARD) at the University of South Florida.
With CARD’s guidance, the museum has
developed programs and resources to help
children with Autism Spectrum Disorder
and their families get the most out of their
experience. Families can download our
Social Story to help plan their visit and can
access our Sensory Toolboxes equipped with
weighed vests, fidget spinners, noise cancelling
headphones, and more during their
visit. GCM’s Camp Imagination celebrates
neurodiversity and welcomes all children to
play and connect in all our camps. Furthermore,
during Summer Camp we are proud
to offer select Autism-Friendly weeks that
have additional specially-trained staff, a
quiet space for campers who need a break,
and an optional orientation the week prior
so campers will know exactly what to expect.
And for families that need a quieter experience,
Sunshine Sunday is a special monthly
event for children with special needs and
their caregivers to explore the Museum with
lights and sounds turned down and sensory
adapted tools, special programs, community
resources, and service providers. And for
families with teens and tweens, check out
Sunshine Squad, a special sensory-friendly
experience during Sunshine Sunday where
your child can interact with their peers who
are on a similar journey.
At the Glazer Children’s Museum, we
believe that every child deserves to play in
a safe, comfortable, and fun environment.
We’re here to help children and families play
and learn together, and we hope you’ll join
us. Let’s play!
