HOT TREND
BUILDINGS
SO BRIGHT,
they gotta
wear shades
BRACE YOURSELVES FOR THE LATEST
smart component in building: Electrochromic glass.
This glass, used throughout the new Cape Cod 5
Headquarters on Route 132 in Hyannis, can automatically tint
when the sun is hitting them directly to reduce glare.
“Glare has always been a problem for productivity,” says
Kurt Raber of Yarmouth Port-based Brown Lindquist Fenuccio
Raber, lead designer on the project. “This allows you to let in
sunlight when you want it and keep it out when you don’t.”
The technology can also make buildings more energy
efficient. Sensors can increase air conditioning or heat in a
particular room if the sun is or isn’t bearing down on that glass,
instead of relying solely on a room thermostat.
Lastly, they can also be set to automatically dim or turn off
interior lights when there is enough daylight to work by.
It won’t be long before this trend hits the residential building
market.
