If you want a little fun while learning from a true master, Chef
David Burke is hosting some light-hearted lessons, ably assisted by his
mini-me puppet assistant. Burke, the master behind a global network
of fine dining restaurants, including the DRIFTHOUSE by David Burke in
Sea Bright, is known for his creative takes on food. These casual videos,
shot in his Atlantic Highlands home kitchen, are sure to make you smile.
Search #cookinDB videos on Facebook and learn about his Feed the Heroes
campaign which allows you to contribute online at chefdavidburke.com to
provide food to fuel the frontline heroes in our area. The campaign recently
fed the medical staff at Riverview Medical Center, so join the movement to
help feed essential employees and get restaurant employees back to work!
DRIFTHOUSE also offers a takeout menu and provisions with curbside
pickup or delivery within 10 miles.
A great resource for food fans is the Facebook page “Curb Side Pick
Up Monmouth County.” This meeting spot was formed to help people find
places offering curbside service, and it exploded organically, with more
than 14,000 members at the time of this writing. Everyone is sharing the
places they find, answering questions for people looking for specialty
items and posting pictures of their latest dishes – just goes to show you
how serious the brotherhood of diners really is.
In closing, I would like to thank everyone for keeping me posted
about what’s going on in your towns. You can email me at loridraz@gmail.
com until we can get back to the serious business of dining in our favorite
spots. Stay well and happy!
WHAT WE LIKE – The unsinkable spirit of these brave businesses who are
doing all they can to keep us fed and keep doors open for the future. The
thousands of servers, kitchen staff and suppliers who are living day to day.
The incredible people of Monmouth County who are ordering take-out. The
memories of all our wonderful dining experiences and the hope we will be
back soon, napkins in laps and menus in hands.
WHAT COULD BE BETTER – Open already! We miss you!

Let me start by saying, I miss restaurants! I miss opening the door and
smelling 100 different meals being cooked. I miss wondering how the
food on other people’s plates tastes. I miss checking out the room to
see if I know anyone. I miss lingering over the menu, trying to envision the
appearance of each dish. I miss the sound of other people’s conversations.
I miss the comfort of ordering a favorite dish and the excitement of trying
something new. I miss that moment of anticipation between when you
order and when your food arrives.
I am tired of looking at my plates and silverware – I want to see the
ones they use in the restaurants. I want a person of passion preparing my
meals and completing the experience with artful presentations. I am tired of
having to get the food myself and having to wash my same old dishes when
I’m done. I miss the conversations over a meal and chatting with the servers.
I miss the décor, the lighting, the music. I even miss the leftovers.
I miss restaurants! I can’t wait to go back. Now can I get an Amen!
As so many other businesses, restaurants are facing a crisis. They
are, however, a creative, hardworking community with a huge fan base.
Restaurant owners everywhere are coming up with interesting specials,
doing deliveries and curbside pick-up, modifying menus and hours, and
rolling out programs to help their employees until they can come back to
work.
One of those programs is being held at 618, located at 618 Park Ave. in
Freehold. They are donating 100 percent of e gift card sales made at 618nj.

Chris and Alexandria Atamian, the charming couple behind Porcini
Italian Trattoria, located at 168 Bay Ave. in Highlands, are operating under
modified hours, but they are making the most of the time by offering
rotating specials and new family style
and freezer fill-up menu selections at
RestaurantPorcini.com.
Also up in Highlands, the
100-year-old perennial Bahrs Landing
is operating under modified hours and
has a big take-out menu at BahrsToGo.
com. The restaurant also offers some
creative libations, like their Lobster
Boss Martini Kit complete with
everything but the ice. Bahrs is located
at 2 Bay Ave. in Highlands.
Patrizia’s located at 28 Broad
