Neither Spanish nor moss, this grayish air plant graces countless live oaks and bald cypress all
over the South. Preferring high humidity and growing well in both sun and filtered light, Spanish
moss needs no cultivation to thrive. It is propagated both by seeds and festoons: broken bits carried
by wind or even birds to suitable landings on fences, power lines or other trees.
Early European arrivals observed Indians here wearing it as clothing. (British observers may have been
mocking whiskered Spanish competitors when naming the beard-like plant.) Absorbent and cushiony,
strands were stuffed into mattresses and even car seats well into modern times.
Tillandsia usneoides admirers beware: warnings of chiggers (red bugs) infesting the epiphyte are rampant.
