CNHS Standout Thrower Breaks Personal,
School and State Records
BY TIM MORRIS
Cole Tucker is an athlete who
knows that what he does in
workouts will translate to competition.
When the Colts Neck High
School shot put thrower headed into
-
he believed his personal best and
school record, 57 feet and 5 inches,
was in jeopardy.
“I was throwing pretty well,”
Tucker said of his pre-meet workouts.
He felt good heading to the
Rebel Shot Put Series held at the
Bennett Indoor Complex on Feb.
23, but throwing well was an under-
in Toms River went 58 and 59 feet,
exceeding his best from 2020 – and
the best was still to come.
“On my last throw, I just let it
go,” Tucker recalled. “It felt good to
I wanted to be over 60 feet before the outdoor meets.”
The 12-pound steel ball landed 62 feet and 8¼ inches from the cir-
mark indoors, a new Freehold Regional District record (eclipsing the previous
record of 59 feet, 7 ¾ inches set by Freehold Borough’s Dave O’Rourke),
and even more impressive, the best throw in the state in 2021.
Tucker then took that momentum from the Rebel series to the Adidas
Indoor Nationals, held Feb. 26 to 28 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. There, he
broke his personal best again and took his place among the country’s elite
throwers. His 63 feet, 3¼-inch throw was good enough for second place
and All-American honors. The throw was also No. 2 in the United States for
2021. It’s a sign that he has taken his strength to a whole new level.
“All-America means a lot to me,” said Tucker. “I would say it has
been a goal of mine since I was a freshman. Back then, I didn’t even think
of it as a possibility.”
But through his dedication over
his four years at Colts Neck, that goal
became a reality. So did another.
Tucker will be continuing his track
-
ty. He signed with the Terriers earlier
this school year. Tucker said he is
familiar with BU’s throwing coach,
Grant Cartright, who steered him to
the Boston school.
Throwing beyond 65 feet when
the outdoor season is completed
in June is Tucker’s goal looking forward,
and he is well on his way.
Tucker gives credit to Jon
Kalnas, the former Monmouth University
All-American and Olympic
throwing guru for Shore-area high
school throwers.
Tucker was able to work with
Kalnas in the summer which helped
improve his technique in the circle.
Throwing the shot put takes more than just muscle.
“I feel quicker and better technically,” Tucker said. Something that
Tucker has been working on is holding his left arm back while he spins in
the circle. He explained it was important to keep his hips from opening
up too soon, and holding the arm back made the difference. Tucker noted
that being off the slightest in his technique could cost him up to 10 feet
in a throw.
While everything is looking up for Tucker regarding the shot put,
the indoor results bode well for what might be his best event, the discus,
which is only contested outdoors. His personal best is 138 feet and 7
inches from his sophomore year. There was no outdoor season in 2020
where he could have bettered that mark. He is looking forward to seeing
how far he can whirl the platter this spring too.
