HOME MODIFICATION & REPAIR
MAKING HOME MODIFICATIONS
Home modifications can be as simple as
replacing doorknobs with levers and adding
grab bars in the bathroom or as involved as
building an accessory dwelling.
1. Evaluate your loved one’s needs. Consider
mobility, balance, physical strength,
eyesight, etc.
2. Assess the home and list modifications
needed to ensure the safety and livability
of the home.
Common home modifications include:
• Installing a wheelchair ramp
• Installing grab bars in bathrooms
• Adding traction or non-skid strips on slick
flooring
• Adding/adapting lighting for increased
visibility and security
• Installing auto shut off appliances
• Widening doorways

PAYING FOR MODIFICATIONS
Private pay is the most common way to pay
for modifications. Assistance may be available
through:
• Medicaid Home and Community Based
Services (HCBS) Waivers
• Medicare/Medicare Advantage Benefits
for Home Modifications
• Veterans Programs for Home Modifications
• Grants through local non-profit and
foundation programs in your community
When no assistance is available, you may
consider a reverse mortgage or home equity
line of credit. See page 68 for information about
reverse mortgage.
