DeVry University Appoints Raquel
Tamez to Board of Trustees

DeVry University has appointed
Raquel Tamez to join its Board
of Trustees. In this role, she will
help govern DeVry as an education
leader and innovator in closing society’s
opportunity gap.

Officer (CIEO) at Charles River Associates.
Tamez previously served as CEO of
the Society of Hispanic Professional
Engineers, a national organization
focused on empowering the Hispanic
community to achieve its full potential in STEM. Hired
as the company’s first-ever CIEO in May 2021,
Tamez is developing programs and initiatives aimed
at diversifying CRA’s workforce and strengthening its
culture. Be it in STEM, economics or access to
higher education, Tamez tirelessly advocates for
diversity, equity and inclusion on campuses and in
workplaces.
“As we have watched the world change in a few
short years, the education landscape has been
altered too,” added Tamez. “With its ability to
seamlessly transition to remote learning during the
pandemic, DeVry provided education and training,
not only to its students, but to the communities and
corporate partners they serve. I look forward to
helping DeVry be a key force in connecting diverse,
adult learners to career paths that will help drive our
economy forward.”
Elmy Bermejo has a
passion for building and
strengthening relationships
while assisting people and
organizations attain their goals. She
has been a senior government official with more than 25 years of experience
at the executive level and has established a successful record of
collaboration with public and private stakeholders on a range of issues
including workforce development, disaster relief, and small business support.
She recently served as the Northern California Director for External Affairs
for Governor Gavin Newsom; prior to that, she served as a Senior Adviser
and Outreach Director for Lt. Governor Eleni Kounalakis of California,
the first woman ever selected for this position. Elmy also served in the
Obama-Biden administration at the US Department of Labor as the Regional
Representative to the Secretary and as Director of Intergovernmental Affairs.
She serves on the San Francisco Commission on the Environment,
The Women’s Foundation of CA and is an Advisory member of Hispanas
Organized for Political Equality (HOPE) and the Leo T. McCarthy Center for
Public Service and the Public Good.
Region 9 serves Arizona, California, Guam, Hawaii and Nevada. Elmy is
HOPE Leadership Institute Alumna ('99), HOPE Advisory Board Member,
and formed HOPE Board Chair. She is a committed leader with over 25
years of experience at the executive level and has established a successful

issues including workforce development, disaster relief, and small
business support.
Dr. Betty A. Rosa, Commissioner of
Education & President of the University
of the State of New York
Dr. Betty A. Rosa is
the Commissioner of
Education and Pre sident
of the University of the State of New
York. Dr. Rosa was appointed as
permanent Commissioner on this
year by the Board of Regents.
She is the first Latina to serve in
the position.
Previously, Dr. Rosa served as
Interim Commissioner since August
2020. Prior to that, she served as
Chancellor of the Board of Regents
since 2016. Dr. Rosa was elected
by her Board of Regents colleagues
as Chancellor in March 2016 and re-elected for a second term in 2019. She
was first elected to the Board of Regents for a five-year term in 2008, as the
Regent for the 12th Judicial District (Bronx County), then re-elected for a
second term in 2013 and a third term in 2018.
Dr. Rosa is a nationally recognized education leader and received an
Ed. M. and Ed. D. in Administration, Planning and Social Policy from Harvard
University. She also holds two other Master of Science in Education degrees,
one in Administration and Supervision and the other in Bilingual Education
from the City College of New York and Lehman College, respectively, and a
B.A. in psychology from the City College of New York. She has more than 30
years of instructional and administrative experience with an expertise in
inclusive education, cooperative teaching models, student achievement, and
policy implementation. LS
