Sunset On Clearwater Beach is a 48 x 180 inch oil on canvas painting by
Christopher Still, which was commissioned by Ocean Properties, Ltd.,
in the Collection of Opal Sands Resort on Clearwater Beach.
SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2016 | TAMPA BAY MAGAZINE 49
will be filled with the beauty of the
sunset on one side and Pier 60 on the
other.
Still was asked to contribute his
ideas for art that would “reflect the
unique beauty of Clearwater Beach,”
and Pier 60 was a natural choice. The
painting depicts how, at the close
of each day, colorful umbrellas dot
the pier, as visitors and locals alike
are drawn to the beach to watch the
sunset. The artist skillfully depicted
members of the Walsh family as one
of the groups of viewers on the pier.
Tom Walsh, Sr. of Ocean Properties
stands with his sons and grandson,
as they look back towards the Opal
Sands Resort. Still includes them as the
next and newest generation of familyowned
hoteliers on Clearwater Beach.
The artist’s vision was to capture the
beauty of the sun and water, while
also creating an iconic painting of this
Tampa Bay landmark. Still said, “As a
Tampa Bay native, it is heartwarming
to paint the beauty of our daily life and
to see that it is appreciated nationally
and internationally.”
Visitors can enjoy the art in the lobby
of Opal Sands Resort, along with fine
dining at “Sea-Guini,” or enjoy a
more casual experience outside at the
“Sandbar.” In addition to his painting,
Still also collaborated with sculptor
Mark Aeling of MGA Sculpture Studio
to create a magnificent glass and metal
work of fine art titled Ascent. Still was
introduced to Aeling by longtime
friend and art agent Alison West
Brown. Ascent can be seen as you first
enter the hotel and rise up the elevator,
symbolizing a swimmer looking at the
water above as they rise to the surface.
Still also worked with artists Carrie
Jadus, Duncan McClellan, Mariel
Bass, and Istvan Torok to develop art
elements for the resort that add to the
modern décor and celebrate the beauty
of Clearwater Beach. Still says he is
honored the Walsh Family and Ocean
Properties Ltd. commissioned him to
create a project celebrating the beauty
of Clearwater Beach, and he hopes to
see you enjoying a sunset at the Opal
Sands Resort.
