Finding A Lost Pet
Pets find themselves “lost” for
many reasons, often by accident. It
can be a very dangerous and stressful
time for pets and their owners
but there are several steps to take
to ensure that you and your loved
pet are reunited. Every pet should
be microchipped and owner information
kept updated. Collars and
tags, which every pet should wear,
can be easily lost so a microchip is
a permanent backup that shelters
and veterinarians can scan for and
trace when a pet is found. Do not
leave pets unattended outdoors
or in vehicles. Keep screen doors,
doors and gates locked. Contact utility
companies and schedule meter
reading visits. If you do suspect your
pet is missing, do not wait for him to
come home (especially when cats
are involved). Check your neighborhood
and speak with your neighbors
to alert them your pet is missing.
Contact local shelters and animal
services to report your lost pet. Visit
shelters immediately and follow up
regularly. Post signs with pictures
and your contact information as well
as place an ad in the local paper.
Social media sites are also good
places to post “lost pet” information.
Your pet cannot call home so it is
important you make those calls for
him or her. Don’t give up! Some pets
have been found weeks, months and
even years after being lost.
