current student is in his 70s. “Over the
years, technology has really improved
the safety of the sport and made it
accessible to anyone,” says McCann. “I
love watching students go from beginner
to a point where it changes their life.
It can give people a feeling of WOW;
it makes them feel excited about life
again—exhilarated and rejuvenated.”

advanced kiteboarders can gain heights
up to 90 feet, depending on wind conditions.
What’s it like? “It’s a feeling like
wakeboarding behind a boat where you
have control of the power and boosting
into the sky,” he says. “Everything slows
down and goes quiet for a moment. You
for a few seconds. Then depending on
how well you control the kite, you can
either come down with a big bang or
soft as a feather.”

and is the Tampa Bay area’s largest provider

fellow ‘Burg residents, have fun and get
a little exercise. The two biggest social
sport events of the year—Tampa Bay
Field Day and Extreme Mud Wars—are
also fundraisers for Big Brothers Big
Sisters.
