Generosity of South Shore Community
Members Administered by the
Community Foundation of Tampa Bay
In the almost 30 years since
the Community Foundation
of Tampa Bay was founded,
its generous donors have
made possible more than
$230 million in grants to
nonprofit organizations, many of
them in the South Shore area.
Each year, as much as $1 million
flows through the Community
Foundation of Tampa Bay’s South
Shore Council for projects that
include:
• The Mary Petro Fund for Food
and Medicine: When she died
in 2009 at 96, Mary Petro left her
significant estate to the
Community Foundation of Tampa
Bay to help her neighbors.
The Mary Petro Food and
Medicine Fund generates
more than $100,000 a year that
is distributed to those in need
who live in Sun City Center or the
Kings Point retirement
community. The program is
administered for the Community

• Wimauma Community
Education Partnership: The
Community Foundation of Tampa
Bay brought together more
than 40 public and nonprofit
organizations to implement
programs to help children in
Wimauma be ready for
kindergarten and to achieve
reading proficiency by 3rd grade.
The Foundation has committed
up to $100,000 annually for the
program, made possible by the
legacy fund of Sun City Center
resident Harold Corrigan. Now
in its third year, the partnership
includes the Hillsborough
County School District,
Wimauma Community
Development Corporation,
Enterprising Latinas, Boys &
Girls Clubs of Tampa Bay,
Allegany Franciscan
Ministries, Children’s Board
of Hillsborough County,
Hispanic Services Council,
Redlands Christian Migrant
Association, PCAT (Parents
& Children Achieve Together)
and more.
• Support for local institutions:
