MY PERSPECTIVE

JESUIT PERSPECTIVES • WINTER 2019-20 39
During my time as a student,
the many community and
personal growth opportunities
at Jesuit were often highlighted
in Convocation. As much
as I listened, I tended to view these
concepts as merely a series of buzz
words.
I had a reserved temperament in
high school and didn’t intentionally
engage in many extracurricular
opportunities outside of my sport.
I fostered some great friendships
with my baseball teammates and
classmates with common interests,
for sure, but that was easy because
I gravitated to those who were
like me. In effect, I closed myself
off from experiencing so much of
what Jesuit had to offer. Looking
back, I realize I could have gained
much more from high school if
I was willing to open up and not
anything else in life, what is most
impactful are our personal experiences.
I understand why many will limit
themselves: we don’t want to get
out of our comfort zone. For me,
the root of the issue has primarily
been fear – the fear of what oth-

ers think of me. That fear has held
me back, particularly as a teenager.
As such, I am compelled not to let
current students repeat my mistakes.
With over 50 student clubs now, I
know there are multiple areas of interest
for each student to explore.
The fact that we have so many clubs
is not only a credit to our dedicated
faculty who serve as club moderators,
but also to our many students who
understand (better than I did) how
important it is to invest in personal
growth. Along with our faculty and
staff, our student leaders have created
an environment that welcomes
critical thinking and the development
of the whole person. Our student life
is as dynamic as ever. I want to make
sure every student at Jesuit takes advantage
of these opportunities
Jesuit’s commitment to growth is a
testament to the idea that we should
continue to evolve and improve as
time passes. It holds true for all of us.
As a high school student, I restricted
my perspective and never gave
myself a true opportunity to grow
outside of the student-athlete realm.
I didn’t begin to open up until college,
and, to my deep regret, I missed
meaningful developmental opportunities.
In my new role as Director of
Student Activities, I am committed
to providing the means and encouragement
for today’s Tigers to hone
their talents, explore various interests,
discover new interests, grow in
horizons.
The community and growth opportunities
at Jesuit are as bountiful as
ever. My hope and prayer is that all
of our students cultivate the courage
to open themselves up and actively
engage in our community and greater
society. It is my mission to help see
that happen. They will be much better
for it, and so too will our world.
