(L-R): Nellie Borrero, Managing Director – Senior Global I&D and
Client Market Lead, Accenture; Robert Bard, CEO, LATINA Style, Inc.,
Flower Cantu-Kelley – Director HR – Planning & Staff Operations –
ERGs Lead, Sprint and 2019 LATINA Style Corporate Executive of the
Year; Lupita Colmenero, COO, LATINA Style, Inc., and Dr. Betty Uribe.
As we begin 2020 I cannot remember a year that began with so many
uncertainties as this one. We celebrated our 22nd Annual LATINA Style
50 Awards and Diversity Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C. in early
February and it was a huge success. During the program, we recognized our 2019
LATINA Style Corporate Executive of the Year, Flower Cantu-Kelley - Director HR
- Planning & Staff Operations - ERGs Lead at Sprint, and the 2019 Employee
Resource Group of the Year, UTC - Pratt & Whitney. It was in the nick of time since
shortly thereafter that drastic measures for the prevention of the spread of the
coronavirus begun.
Corporations have stopped executive travel, except under emergency
conditions. So many conferences that are supposed to be taking place across the
country are facing now uncertain future. The scope of the coronavirus epidemic is
just beginning to show its ugly face around the world. Today we heard that Japan
is considering to postpone the Tokyo Olympics for an undetermined date. The cost
of such an endeavor will exceed 20 billion dollars. Soccer matches in Europe are
already taking place in front of empty stadiums, and large gatherings of people are
being discouraged. We are facing a very difficult situation. As news organizations
spend so much time calling each other fake news, where do you get information
you can trust? On top of everything this is an election year with massive
gatherings of people across the country. The recipe for dire consequences is
already out there. I strongly advise that you visit the CDC website and follow their
instructions. They will have the latest information and advice that will help you
protect yourself and your family. Please do not take these warnings lightly.
Our first issue of the year is always dedicated to Latina artists and we are
proud to feature two amazing Latinas, Alondra de la Parra and Ailyn Pérez. While
Alondra excels as an orchestra conductor, Ailyn is leading a new generation of
opera singers commanding the stage as a soprano singer. Their talent and
dedication go beyond the stage as they also bring awareness to their Mexican
Heritage.
On a separate note, the 2020 LATINA Style 50 Survey is now available
online at our website www.latinastyle50.com. The deadline to submit the survey
is May 29th, 2020. We look forward to seeing your company on the list this year.
