President’s Message
Dear Trojan Alum and Friends,
As we prepare this edition for print, it’s summer. A summer
unlike any other following a pandemic unlike anything
experienced in more than a century. When the theme of
“Reimagining Dreams” was selected this past spring, we
could not have foreseen its relevancy to current affairs.
Following the unnecessary death of George Floyd, ACM
rededicated itself to upholding our college’s fundamental
beliefs in equity, equality, opportunity, and inclusivity in all
that we do each and every day.
Guided by our Diversity Committee and assisted by our students, we plan to offer
a safe space for thoughtful dialogues about the impacts of racial and other forms
of discrimination and how we can better support one another. These will be continued
discussions—most likely virtual and open to all who wish to participate—and part of
a focused plan for the future.
With the help of our students, our colleagues, and our community, we hope these
conversations will provide an opportunity to learn, act, and heal. It’s an important
journey for our ACM family at a time when health and safety concerns are paramount.
In this edition of ACCESS ACM, we consider stories of individuals and groups who’ve
chosen to reshape their lives to attain their goals. A beloved community member who
left a small Pennsylvania community to find her calling in post-WWII Cumberland.
A scholarship awardee originally from Cameroon who overcame obstacles to become
a leader on campus. A father who secretly attended college to surprise his college student
daughter. A society that helps people time travel. An alum whose political aspirations had
their inception at ACM. Along the way, we’ll celebrate the 30th anniversary of
our ACM Bedford County Campus, applaud our Distinguished Alumni of the Year,
and much more.
With gratitude,
Dr. Cynthia Bambara
President
