EDUCATION,
INTERRUPTED
It’s a degree that took
42 years to earn.
Richard “Dan” Bible enrolled
at Allegany Community
College in 1978 after
serving in the Army’s 82nd
Airborne Division. “What young
man wouldn’t love jumping out an
airplane?” jokes Bible.
He took courses in electromechanical
technology for a few
years, but left for Portland, Oregon
in 1982 to work for a year before
returning to ACC. This time, he
opted for business and general
education courses. In 1983, he was
taking Professor Jim Zamagias for
an English course when he jumped
again, this time on the chance to
buy a grocery and convenience
store on Old Route 40/Route 144.
He dropped out of school.
A business is only as good as
its manager, he soon found out.
From behind the counter at
Highway Grocery, Bible learned
to read people and consider their
motivations and complications.
He managed personnel and all
aspects of buying and selling.
