The Society of Jesus
wasn’t founded by St.
Ignatius of Loyola and
his six companions with the
specific intent of blanketing
the globe with outstanding
institutions of learning. But not
too long after the Jesuit Order
was approved by Pope Paul
III in 1540, it became apparent
there was a strong need for
Catholic schools, and the Jesuits
were up to the task. Now, 480
years after the founding, the
Jesuits, though involved in many
different apostolic works, are
firmly associated with excellence
in education, in the complete
formation of students at schools
around the world. Hundreds of
thousands have benefited from a
Jesuit education, including more
than 9,000 graduates of Jesuit
High School of Tampa since its
founding in 1899. Many Jesuit
Tampa alumni, influenced by
the impact of their high school
experience, have pursued their
calling in education. Over the
next 10 pages, several alumni
serving with distinction and
purpose in primary, secondary,
and higher education, as
teachers, professors, and
administrators, are profiled,
including middle school principal
Kevin Donohue ’06, university
professor Mike Doyle ’66, “Chief
Learner” Richard Sherin ’98,
and several more who have
returned to educate right here at
Jesuit in Tampa.
