FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Parents, Alumni, and Friends of Jesuit,
2 JESUIT PERSPECTIVES • FALL 2021
As we commemorated
the 20th anniversary
attacks on our homeland, we
responders and also the sacri-
in our military, especially those
who served in the wars of the
past 20 years.
From May 2021 until July 2022,
the Society of Jesus is celebrating
the Ignatian Year, in recognition
of the 500th anniversary of
the conversion of Saint Ignatius
and the 400th anniversary of his
canonization. In a Perspectives
issue dedicated to Jesuit alumni
who have served in the military,
it is apposite to recall that
the conversion of Saint Ignatius
was occasioned by a wound he
himself suffered in battle, defending
the citadel at Pamplona.
The decisive leadership, courage,
spirit of camaraderie, and sense
of honor that Ignatius acquired
and displayed as a soldier are
qualities that he also pressed
into the service of the Lord in
founding and governing the Society
of Jesus. They are important
qualities that form the human
foundation of his sanctity. These
same qualities apply to so many
of our alumni who have dedicated
themselves to military service.
Jesuit High School has a proud
tradition of preparing men to
serve our nation. School records
dating back to 1905 refer to the
“cadets” in our ROTC program and
describe their activities as “performing
drills,” “marching,” and
participating in Memorial Day
programs and parades for the local
community. Just weeks after the
attacks on Pearl Harbor in 1941, the
school transitioned into a military
institution through a partnership
with MacDill Air Force Base. The
“Jesuit High School Battalion” was
formed and served as a “principal
contribution to the war effort.” For
the next three-and-a-half years,
students donned military dress
uniforms, cadre (active service-
all graduating seniors immediately
entered the service.
