University Chronicles The crowd at the Marion Bowman Activities Center witnessed a special reunion when Natasha Hauber, who earned a master’s degree in criminal justice, received a surprise visit from her brother, all the way from Germany. 24 FALL 16 Spirit Magazine TURNING THE TASSEL The Saint Leo University alumni ranks grew to more than 80,000 this year with commencement ceremonies taking place from coast to coast. At University Campus, close to 1,200 students graduated during three ceremonies held April 29 and 30. Those events kicked off the “commencement season” for Saint Leo with 15 more ceremonies being held near education centers throughout May and June. A native of São Paulo, Brazil, Gus Felipak immigrated to the United States when he was 16. After starting and stopping his college journey twice, this working father graduated from Saint Leo’s online degree program. Thomas Dempsey, trustee emeritus, enjoyed watching his grandchildren graduate at University Campus. Alexis Dempsey earned her MBA, and Masterson Dempsey, who also was the senior class speaker, received his bachelor’s degree in international tourism and hospitality management. Danielle Bunin, an expectant mom overtaken by the heat, missed her commencement ceremony on April 30. However she received her diploma from Dr. Lennox in a special ceremony in June, with her husband and son watching. Benjamin Alan Bunin was born on August 21. Abena Ankomah ’11, ’16 earning her MBA
