Our creative team had a few meetings and decided on what we wanted to do. The pieces in this article showcase embroidery and quilting in a way that has never been done before. The pieces range in size from 12”x12” to 5’x8’. They were all designed to be mounted on wood. Now, you might say, “Why would you take a perfectly good quilt and mount it on wood?” The idea was to treat the fabric as a canvas for the art pieces. Each of the pieces started with a quilt or tapestry as a background, some of which we left alone and some we painted. Painted! This may seem like blasphemy to some of you. You should have heard the gasps in the crowd when I showed these pieces at a recent Embroidery Party. The end result is amazing. The paint still allowed the character of the fabric and thread to show through, but in an entirely different way. Choosing fabric was also important. Instead of using traditional quilting fabrics, I decided to go a completely different route. I traveled to NYC and visited all of the high-end fabric stores. The backgrounds or quilted elements of the pieces show case Chanel, Oscar De La Renta, Marc Jacobs, and Vera Wang fashion fabrics as well as Hermes Silk scarves and textiles. You may say that these are very expensive fabrics, and you would be right. There are fabrics in this collection that sell for well over $200.00 a yard. Remember, these pieces are being created for a fine art show, so they needed to look different and unique. Once we had the fabric, we proceeded to cut it up into tiny pieces and create the backgrounds.
