SCULPTURALLY SPEAKING By Robin Salmon, Vice-President of Art and Historical Collections/Curator of Sculpture Once again, Brookgreen Gardens is the sole venue for the spectacular National Sculpture Society 84th Annual Awards Exhibition. Th e exhibit opened August 5 and continues through October 29. Included in this year’s exhibit are 47 works by 47 sculptors hailing from 19 states crisscrossing America – from Washington to Florida and California to Vermont. In addition, there are two sculptors from China, one from Canada, and one from Norway. Th e National Sculpture Society, the oldest professional organization of sculptors in America, presents the work of masters alongside rising stars in American sculpture. Among those in the exhibit are 11 Fellows, 15 Elected Members, and 21 Associates. Fifteen awards are presented by the Society – including one new award this year – along with the popular People’s Choice Award, determined by votes of visitors to Brookgreen Gardens. Th e winners will be announced in a celebration on October 28 where several of the sculptors will be in attendance. Comprised of depictions of the human fi gure, animals, and other nature-based subjects, there is a delightful blend of classical and avant-garde styles. Th ere are 27 sculptures in bronze, two stone-carvings, two woodcarvings, and 16 sculptures in plaster, resin, or fi red clay. Th e range of subjects include a portrait of artist Charles M. Russell, a look inside the human mind, Revelation 12:7, and a crowing rooster titled Wake Up, America! Th is exhibit has something for everyone and is sure to pique your interest.
