Florida Studio Theatre
The FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor
Training premiered a new professional summer
company in 2017: the Dog Days Theatre.
The company is made up of professional actors
and students in the conservatory.
The downtown Sarasota performing arts
district is home to the Florida Studio Theatre
(FST). FST’s village of theaters offer Broadway
and off-Broadway productions; social and political
satires; and stirring, offbeat plays geared
to spark discussions. FST also hosts the annual
Sarasota Improv Festival each summer, drawing
comedy troupes from across the nation.
Urbanite Theatre is downtown Sarasota’s
contemporary black box theater. The Urbanite
is known for its bold “fringe” productions
and undiscovered works from new and
intriguing playwrights.
Just minutes north of downtown Sarasota
is the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe
(WBTT), one of just two black theater troupes
in Florida. The WBTT stages productions highlighting
the Black American experience from its
home base in Sarasota, as well as in theater competitions
across the nation. Several actors who
have moved on to the Apollo Theatre, Broadway
and television got their start on the WBTT stage.
The Players Theatre, downtown Sarasota’s
community theater, got its start in 1936. To this
day, the award-winning nonprofessional theater
stages a diverse array of volunteer-driven
productions with a cast of retired professionals
and amateur acting hobbyists.
Don’t miss the iconic purple Van Wezel
Performing Arts Hall on the Sarasota Bayfront.
