Chantel Morton, Program Staff Director
As the season of giving and spreading joy continues, we continue to count
our blessings! TYBEE FOR THE HOLIDAYS is in full swing and the Community
of Caring boxes are filling up, the tree will be lit December 1, parades are
happening, and holiday parties are filling our calendars! Hopefully, you are
enjoying the winter so far and taking time for yourself too.
Does taking time for yourself mean having someone else make a meal or
two for you and the fam, especially on a holiday day? Well then, check out
the list of restaurants that will be open under “holiday dining” at http://www.
tybeefortheholidays.com/holiday-dining/!
As mentioned, Community of Caring donation boxes are filling up. Community
of Caring, which was added in 2009 for the holiday season, has become a
tradition for many store owners and residents during the holidays. Donations
for Tybee’s Rising TYde Food Pantry, Next Generation – Memorial University
Medical Center Children’s Hospital, and the animal shelter are being accepted
thru New Year’s Day. Check out participating locations and a list of items
needed at http://www.tybeefortheholidays.com/community-of-giving/.
The first weekend of December is filled with family fun! Friday, December 1 at
6:30 pm is the annual Lights on for Tybee Celebration downtown Tybee, with
complimentary refreshments at various locations, singing, dancing, awards,
and visitors from the North Pole for the kids. Thanks to the students with
Tybee Island Maritime Academy, the Christmas tree has even more special
handcrafted ornaments. Mayor Buelterman will light the island’s Christmas
tree at the Roundabout. Tybee Arts Association & Performing Society will be
providing entertainment with caroling, students with The STUDIO will perform,
awards will be presented, and a special flash mob – with your help – will
welcome our North Pole weekend guests.
Saturday, December 2 at 1 pm is the Tybee Island Christmas Parade. Mr. and
Mrs. Clause will be led from downtown to the Tybee gym by candy-giving elves
and festive floats. Once they arrive at the Gym, the Tybee YMCA will host photo
time, refreshments, and activities for all to enjoy. We look forward to having
everyone share their holiday music and costumes on their decked out parade
floats.
This weekend will also be your opportunity to experience House of the
Christmas Mouse at the Arts Center, the annual Lighthouse Christmas begins,
have fun raising money for Tybee’s food pantry while staying “INN,” and
participate in the floating Christmas Parade.
Through New Year’s Day there are a plethora of activities for you to partake
in. Details that everyone contributed about holiday activities for the public
and that benefit various charities, church services, etc. can be found at www.
tybeefortheholidays.com. This website is your convenient one-stop site to help
you plan ahead or, if you prefer, at the last minute. ;-)
