Float Like A Butterfly
explore / travelin’ south /
Looking to see something truly beautiful? You only need
to head down south to visit Butterfly World in Coconut
Creek. In most cases you are just minutes away. Don’t
think it’s worth a trip to drive just to see butterflies? Well,
the trip is worth the journey!
Butterfly World first opened its doors to the general public
in 1988 after Ronald Boender started a butterfly farm
earlier in his career and sought to find a way to construct
a butterfly house available to the whole public. He partnered
with Britishman Clive Farrell, founder/owner of the
London Butterfly House and together the two men came
up with Butterfly World.
Butterfly World keeps 10,000 butterflies on exhibit, which
can number from 50 different species to 150 species
over the course of one full year. Some of the non-tropical
butterflies must “hibernate” during their life cycles
therefore some of them may not be out when you come
by. But there are plenty to see floating around. While you
there stop by the Butterfly Farm & Research Lab where
caterpillars grow into butterflies everyday. In the lab you
will view the various stages of a butterfly’s life, from egg
and larva to hatching into a lovely butterfly. After you visit
the lab, you come out and walk among the many “live”
fluttering butterflies. It’s just like walking through a tropical
rainforest filled with stunning butterflies.
Also, scattered throughout Butterfly World are many colorful
birds such as hummingbirds and lorikeets. You can
even feed the multicolored lorikeets straight from your
hand with a cup of nectar. You can’t miss the lorikeets as
they are like small parrots with vibrant colored feathers.
As well as butterflies and birds, you will see fish throughout
the aviary. And if that isn’t enough, the flowering
plants will astonish you. The lively colors between the
butterflies, the birds and the flowers are almost a lifelike
painting.
This is a must see display and I recommend the travel down
south for a few minutes to visit Butterfly World. Come
visit one weekend when they are doing a Butterfly
Gardening Workshop (typically a monthly class) and
go home and make your own butterfly
garden. Exciting!
