This issue’s theme focuses on litigation and corporate specialties, and we’re
pleased to present articles representing issues unique to paralegals in these practice
specialties. In “Subpoenaing Education Records under the Family Educational
Rights and Privacy Act,” Melany Aldridge, CP, draws on her almost two decades of
experience working in public university legal counsel offices to advise paralegals
about the nuances and complexities involved in obtaining student education
records. Paralegals who follow Aldridge’s practice tips are sure to be rewarded with
the timely receipt of the records they need.
In “The Unique Role of Legal Nurse Consultants in Litigation,” Alicia Davis, RN, LNCC,
explains the unique role of legal nurse consultants in medical-related litigation and offers
guidance by which paralegals can evaluate the credentials of prospective legal nurse
consultant vendors or employees. Much like a well-qualified paralegal is an invaluable
resource to the litigation team, so too is an experienced legal nurse consultant.
In-house paralegals are often involved in developing guidance and best-practice
policies for their company’s human resources department, including on matters
pertaining to recruiting and hiring. In “Social Media Background Screenings:
Potential Benefits and Easily Avoided Risks,” Bianca Lager explains the importance
of an ethically conducted and legally compliant social media background screening
in the candidate selection process. Lager also provides valuable advice on how to
evaluate the qualifications of prospective social media screening vendors.
With this issue, we are pleased to introduce Paralegal Today’s new regularly
recurring column, “All Rise,” that will focus on cases pending before or recently
decided by the Supreme Court of the United States. Decisions in U.S. Supreme Court
cases can have real consequences for clients, and we hope this column will help
paralegals stay informed so they can better serve their attorneys and clients. We are
incredibly fortunate to have this column authored by paralegal Sarah R. Coats, MPS,
RP®, who is an exemplary representative of the legal research, analysis, and writing of
which well-qualified paralegals are capable.
Speaking of exemplary paralegals, in “Remembering the Life and Legacy of Heather
Heyer,” Sherry Karabin shares the poignant story of bankruptcy law paralegal
Heather Heyer, who lost her life while standing for what she believed in. Many
paralegals can relate to how Heyer came as a novice to the paralegal profession, but
with an emphatic desire to help people and learn everything she could. I dare say we
can also relate to her overall passion for justice and admire
Heyer for having the courage of her convictions. Heyer’s
legacy will live on through the Heather Heyer Foundation
Scholarship for Paralegals, Social Workers, and Educators.
Read on to learn how paralegals can honor Heather’s
memory and support the work of the Foundation.
