Requirements for Marriage in North Carolina
Age: All persons 18 years and older may lawfully marry. Signed
parental consent is needed for those younger than 18 years of age.
The Register of Deeds office must witness parental signature and
sign the consent form.
Identification: Both a government issued photo ID and a Social
Security number is required from the applicants.
Waiting Period: There is no waiting period before or after obtaining
the marriage license, and the license is valid for 60 days.
Divorce: Divorced applicants must provide the month and the year
that the divorce had been finalized.
Obtaining a Marriage License: Both applicants must appear in
person with the identification mentioned above to purchase their
marriage license. The cost of the marriage license is $60. Cash or
check only.
The Currituck County Register of Deeds is open from 8 a.m. to 5
p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, for marriage
licenses. Marriage licenses will not be issued after 4 p.m. Please
