Technology continues to shape the paralegal profession
at a rapid pace. While some individuals speculate that
technological advancements will eventually make paralegals
obsolete, others recognize that paralegals who readily
adapt to and adopt technology are more likely to enjoy
long, successful careers as opposed to those who do not.
Although certain traditional paralegal functions are falling
by the wayside due to advanced software and automation
technologies, tech savvy paralegals are finding they are in
even greater demand to fill new roles.
In “Cybersecurity Law: The Next Frontier in Legal
Specialization,” reporter Sherry Karabin details the rapidly
developing practice specialty of cybersecurity law, the recent
proliferation of cybersecurity education programs, and
the career opportunities available to paralegals who move
quickly to meet the need for well-qualified cybersecurity
professionals. Interested in a career in cybersecurity law? Act
now, the future is here!
In “Big Case, Small Firm: Leveraging Technology to Handle
Complex Cases,” Erin Derby, CEDS, explains how even the
smallest boutique firm can utilize technology to handle
complex litigation cases and prevail against large firms with
seemingly unlimited resources. Technology is a great equalizer
in litigation, and leveraging the right technology in a “David vs.
Goliath” legal battle makes it possible for David to win!
Speaking of technology making life easier for paralegals, in
“Evaluating & Outsourcing Firm Operations,” attorney Penn
Dodson makes the case for outsourcing routine functions
so paralegals can be better utilized to perform substantive
work that improves results for firm clients and, ultimately,
the firm. Free your time, and your clients – and supervising
attorney – will thank you!

Paralegal Donna Meiselwitz certainly found her dream job
as a domestic violence victim’s advocate for Harbor House
in Appleton, Wisconsin. We interviewed Meiselwitz for
this issue’s “My Specialty” column – read on to learn more
about Meiselwitz’s passion for her work and what fueled her
decision to pursue a career as a nonprofit paralegal.
Rounding out this issue, Sarah R. Coats, MPS, RP®, delivers
another riveting edition of “All Rise,” catching us up on
the October 2017 term of the Supreme Court of the United
States. We also bring you the annual conference roundup,
summarizing the annual conferences of national paralegal
associations and other organizations impacting the paralegal
profession. And, as this year draws to a close and we look
forward to the promise of a new year, “Ask the Listserv”
participants share some of the challenges and opportunities
they faced in 2017. 2017 was an exciting and eventful year for
the paralegal profession and 2018 promises to be even more so!
Lastly, this issue concludes this year of my tenure as
