THE FLORIDA ORCHESTRA | 2017-2018 61
As The Florida Orchestra marks its
50th season, we remember the man
who was there at the beginning: Irwin
Hoffman. TFO’s first maestro, who
died March 19th at age 93, guided
the fledgling orchestra for 20 years
until Jahja Ling took over in 1988. In
command with only his gestures and
facial expressions – never a baton –
Maestro Hoffman set the standard for
what is now the premier and largest
orchestra in Florida. Visit the TFO Blog
to read stories about the maestro
who was both feared and respected.
