A variety of butteries
call Duette home. The
species pictured on
these pages can be
found in the preserve,
both utilizing native
plants as host plants for
their growing caterpillars
and dining on the
wildowers for nectar
source.
Butteries are important
pollinators for many
of Florida’s native
wildowers and trees.
Both caterpillars and
butteries are an
important part of the
food chain and are prey
for birds, bats and other
animals that eat insects.
Duette’s butteries
are also indicators of
a healthy ecosystem.
When you spot colorful
butteries, you know
that there are lots of
plants to support them.
