#1 Cuban Comfort Food
(Rum Cake Lady Cuban Cafe, 205 W.
First St. & 11 Strauss Village Ln.) — Grab
a fresh-off-the-press Cuban sandwich, some
sweet plantains and a café con leche just like
“mami” used to make at this family-owned
Cuban cafe. Saturdays are for ham croquetas,
and any time is the right time for one of the
Rum Cake Lady’s golden rum cakes. You can
take home a whole, half or mini-bundt cake.
Mix a little mountain air with
some outdoor activity and, suddenly,
what’s for dinner (or breakfast
or lunch!) becomes the most important
question of the day. Turns out, altitude
does affect appetite!
Fortunately, the Blue Ridge
mountains are home to
some truly inspired chefs.
Homegrown favorites
include the proverbial
meat-and-three, as well as
smoky barbecue, delectable
pasta and fresh trout. And several
cutting-edge chefs from across the
South have heeded the call of the
mountains and brought fine dining to
our area with tantalizing appetizers
and full-course meals.
And did you know? You can enjoy
beer, wine and mixed drinks at select
Fannin County restaurants (even on
Sundays in the city of Blue Ridge).
Eat out 4 Dine in
While you’ll definitely want
to visit the restaurants in Blue
Ridge, McCaysville, Morganton
and elsewhere around
the area, don’t forget that
many local stores feature specialty
meats, cheeses, wines and
other delicacies to bring back to the
cabin — or take on a picnic!
See pages 37-41 for special
dining offers.
