There is something unique about catching
a fish while floating across the calm
water in Gasparilla Sound, without a
boat motor humming behind you. Nothing but
the sound of rolling waves and an occasional
mullet jumping from the water.
Kayak fishing is one of the most environmentally
friendly ways to hunt in the sea, and local
guide Bob Fraser makes it easy for anyone to
get out on the water.
Bob is a native of Gainesville. He was a third
grade math teacher, and he also taught
remedial math courses at the high school and
community college level. He has been an avid
kayaker and fisherman for more than 40 years.
After he retired and was able to spend more
time on the water, he decided to purchase a few
more kayaks and launch a business taking others
out to fish in the shallow waters of Gasparilla
Sound.
“I enjoy meeting people from other parts of the
country and talking about things we have in
common, and also learning about their life
experiences,” Bob said. “Most of my clients are
snowbirds or come to Boca Grande for vacation.
Two of my passions are teaching and fishing. As a
kayak fishing guide, I get to combine the two. I enjoy
teaching people how to find and catch fish.”
Many of his clients thank him for teaching them
how to locate good areas for catching a variety of
species.
