Site of the first free black community in the present-day
United States. Fort Mose was settled by slaves who fled
the Carolinas to Spanish Florida in search of freedom.
These settlers fought on the side of the Spanish against
the army of British General James Oglethorpe. The
original fort was sacked and a second one rebuilt, the
site of which is part of an archaeological study (no fort
remains). Boardwalk and picnic area. Part of Northeast
Florida’s Black Heritage Trail.

Completed in 1891, The Old Jail housed prisoners for
over 60 years. Costumed deputies take you on a guided
tour through the sheriff’s quarters, where he and his
family lived adjacent to 72 prisoners, and then into the
original cell blocks. Guests can visit the male and female
cells, maximum-security area and the gallows, which
ended the lives of numerous criminals. See the large
collection of guns used in actual crimes, and even take
a picture with the south’s most feared sheriff, Joe Perry!
