Nature’s Place To Explore!
Florida’s Adventure Coast is an ideal choice for family fun
“off the beaten path”! This area, approximately 50 miles north of
Brandon, abounds in opportunities for outdoor activities in the
county’s nature-packed 589 square miles. The area’s geographic
features include rolling terrain, lush forests, miles of trails, and
approximately 200,000 acres of protected parklands. About 20%
of the county is water, including springs, rivers and lakes. The
area has two incorporated cities—Brooksville in the center and
Weeki Wachee to the west—and a number of other distinctive
communities, such as Hernando Beach, Ridge Manor and Spring
Hill.
CENTURIES OF HISTORY
The Native American presence in what would become Florida’s Adventure
Coast stretches back before recorded history. Spanish explor-
of the region in 1539. Hernando County was established and named
after de Soto on February 27, 1843. The newly christened town of
Brooksville became the county seat in 1856. Confederate and Union
troops clashed in the area during the Civil War, and re-enactors bring
the battle to life today at the annual Brooksville Raid event in January.
