Over the years, Ann Reinking – seen here with young dancers at the 2004 groundbreaking of the Patel Conservatory –
has had a long and fruitful artistic relationship with Tampa and the Straz Center.
Was there a singular event or turning point when you knew dancing was,
in your words in one interview, all you ever wanted to do?
When I fi rst saw ballet, I was in love with it and would be all my life! Dance
(all kinds) is life.
Does a dancer/choreographer of your dedication ever retire? What are
your current projects/involvements?
Not really. I have completed two story ballets with Melissa Thodos and her
company Thodos Dance Chicago as well as other ventures.
Speaking of which, how would you compare your work in the movies
to performing before a live audience?
Like a track and fi eld meet. For theater, I am like a long-distance runner. For
movies, I am a sprinter! Same playing fi eld but a different approach.
As a singer/actress in the show, what was your favorite line of
Roxie Hart’s “Why?”
“I’m older than I ever intended to be!” It’s so funny and true for everyone!
Why do you think Chicago remains compelling and relevant to today’s
audiences?
It is so well-crafted, and it’s so smart, by John Kander, Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse.
These three creators can make classics! It may come from a certain era, but the
work is never dated. It’s universal – satire, wit, sheer entertainment and fun with
a punch!
Did you ever have your legs insured?
My legs are not insured – but fl attering for you to ask.
