Devices that make the
theatre accessible.
Theatergoers who struggle with hearing
loss can still enjoy the show. But while
the technology to help these individuals
has long been available, many are reluctant
to use The Naples Players’ free and
accessible audio equipment.
“I was embarrassed,” patron Janet Keller
said. “I didn’t want my friends to see me
in the theater using headphones.”
Many patrons don’t realize that the theater’s
programming can be discreetly
broadcast directly into most modern
hearing aids.
“I didn’t understand that my hearing aids
had t-coil technology and that I could
just pick up an audio pack and keep it
in my purse. No headphones, no embarrassment,
and I heard every single note
played by the orchestra,” Keller said.
The technology behind hearing devices
has rapidly changed over the past few
years. Modern hearing aids allow listeners
to access t-coil settings and
programming along with environmental
noise simultaneously. Think of it like the
Bluetooth function on your cell phone,
which eliminates the need for cords and
wires.
“Rapid changes in technology are allowing
us to provide high-quality theatrical
experiences to more and more people
with disabilities,” said Craig Price, The
Naples Players’ Director of Education,
who is focused on the theater’s inclusivity.
“We are constantly evaluating how we
can make our theater and programming
more accessible to all people.”
The Naples Players’ hearing assistance
technology also offers Bluetooth and induction
loop (T-coil) technology, in addition
to traditional earphones.
“I can’t believe I let my pride get in
the way of enjoying a show,” Keller remarked.
“I don’t have to choose between
embarrassment or enjoyment.”
