Film Festival
Philosophy and
Selections:
Selections curated
by Jonathan Jackson,
the CEO & Artistic
Director of the
Milwaukee Film
Festival
Selections from the season’s top international festivals will be screened, along with a classic or two. Festival
films can cover a wide range of topics. By their nature, they become festival films by challenging the status
quo. Like any art, they attempt to take a fresh look or perspective on how we see the world.
Documentaries, by their nature, take on issues and tend to take sides in these issues. They can tackle
sensitivities like discrimination, abuse, racism and a host of touchy subjects. Typically, the message is that victims
are real people and the audience has their eyes and hearts opened to their plight. However, most people
wouldn’t want to sit through eight films that push them around politically, religiously or morally.
Scripted movies arise out of good stories. Like any Shakespearean play, they can be tragic or comic. Good
stories are out there, but we will not be showing Star Wars sequels or Transformers derivatives. The goal is to
take a representation of the best festival films from around the country and bring them to Boca Grande for
three days of binge-watching. Laugh, cry, maybe even get angry, but the hope is to thoroughly entertain.
There will not be a political agenda to the film selection process. The aim is not to try to turn Republicans
into Democrats, or pro-choicers into pro-lifers, or terrorists into pacifists. But any of these differences could
provide the dramatic tension that makes for a great film. The best movies make us think and hopefully think
twice. Friends certainly don’t want everyone walking out of the community center auditorium wondering
who the crazy radicals were who chose the films. On the other hand, as Bonnie Raitt put it so well in a song,
“Let’s give ’em something to talk about.” Closing event and audience awards immediately following final
screening.
